Which archipelago cruise is best?

There is no single best archipelago cruise in Stockholm, because the seven on offer do different jobs. The longest sees most and passes Vaxholm, the two-hour loops are the sensible first choice, and two boats add a table. Here is how they compare.

Every archipelago cruise sold for Stockholm on GetYourGuide is a loop. It leaves a central quay, circles part of the inner archipelago and returns to the same quay without landing on an island. Within that shape the choices are real: 75 minutes to three hours, steamship or RIB, a cafeteria or a plated lunch, a quay on Strandvägen or one beside the Royal Palace.

This guide compares the seven guided cruises on this site by what the listings state, so you can match the loop to your afternoon rather than take the first result. If you want to step ashore, the public boats and the one guided day trip that lands are covered in a separate guide.

The quick answer

No single cruise is best. The three-hour Strömma loop on S/S Stockholm sees most of the archipelago and passes Vaxholm. The two-hour loops, the live-guided cruise from Skeppsbron and M/S Vindhem from the Royal Palace, are the sensible first choice for most visitors. The lunch cruise and the fika boat add a table. The RIB is for speed, the wooden boat for charm, and the 75-minute winter tour is the one to book when the water freezes.

What is the best archipelago cruise in Stockholm?

It depends on how long you have. The three-hour Strömma loop sees most; the two-hour loops are the sensible default; the lunch and fika boats add food to the view.

Seven guided cruises leave central Stockholm for the inner archipelago. They range from 75 minutes to three hours, and they leave from four quays within about a kilometre of each other: Strandvägen, Strömkajen, Skeppsbron by the Gustav III statue, and the Logården side of the Royal Palace. The table below sets them side by side using what each listing states.

Read the Length and Suits columns first. Length decides how far out you get: the shorter loops circle Fjäderholmarna, the longer ones reach Stora Höggarn and Tegelön, and the three-hour Strömma loop is the one described as passing Vaxholm. For the honest question of whether a cruise is the right way to see the archipelago at all, read the best way to see the archipelago.

How long should an archipelago cruise be?

Two hours is the sweet spot for a first visit. Ninety minutes stays close to Fjäderholmarna; three hours is the one that reaches Vaxholm.

The Strömma listing describes its three lengths plainly. The 1.5-hour tour covers the city and the archipelago around Fjäderholmarna, the 2.5-hour tour is billed as the best of the inner archipelago, and the three-hour tour is the longest, seeing most of the archipelago and passing Vaxholm. Each length has its own boat and berth on Strandvägen: M/S Angantyr and M/S Evert Taube at berth 14 for the short loop, M/S Östanå I at berth 15 for 2.5 hours, and S/S Stockholm at berth 16 for three.

The two-hour cruises from the other operators cover similar water to the middle Strömma option. The live-guided cruise lists Fjäderholmarna, Stora Höggarn, Tegelön and Vaxholm among the places it passes; M/S Vindhem lists the Djurgården canal, Fjäderholmarna, Stora Höggarn and Tegelön. Shorter than that, the wooden boat at 1 hour 45 minutes and the winter tour at 75 minutes keep to the city and Fjäderholmarna.

Which quay does each cruise leave from?

Four quays within about a kilometre: Strandvägen for Strömma and the RIB, Strömkajen for the winter tour, Skeppsbron for the live cruise and the wooden boat, and the Royal Palace's Logården side for M/S Vindhem.

The quays are close enough to confuse, so note the exact one when you book. Strömma's archipelago tours use Strandvägen berths 14, 15 and 16, with the lunch cruise at berth 15 opposite the Diplomat Hotel. The RIB meets at Strandvägen berth 19. The winter tour departs from Strömkajen at Södra Blasieholmshamnen 11, gate B or C.

Across the water on Skeppsbron, the live-guided cruise departs next to the Gustav III statue, with check-in 15 minutes before at the RED Sightseeing booth in front of the Royal Palace, and the wooden boat meets staff in blue shirts or jackets next to the same statue at Skeppsbron 2. M/S Vindhem is the odd one out: it moors on the Logården side of the Royal Palace, the opposite side from Skeppsbron, at Skeppsbron 101, and its listing asks you to be there 20 minutes before.

Which archipelago cruise passes Vaxholm?

The three-hour Strömma cruise, the two-hour live-guided cruise and the RIB. The shorter loops turn back before it.

Vaxholm is the town Strömma calls the capital of the archipelago, about an hour from the city by boat. Among the cruises, the Strömma listing says the three-hour tour on S/S Stockholm passes by Vaxholm, the live-guided cruise lists Vaxholm on its pass-by route, and the RIB listing names Vaxholm Fortress as a point it reaches before heading back under the Djurgårdsbrunn canal bridges.

Passing is the word. No cruise on this site lands at Vaxholm or anywhere else. If the fortress and the town are the point of the day, the guided small-group day trip is the product that lands, with the fortress museum entrance included; the islands guide explains how it fits with the public boats.

Which cruise includes food?

The lunch cruise includes a main course and M/S Vindhem includes a fika. The others have a cafeteria or bar where food and drink are bought on board.

Two listings put food in the price. The Strömma archipelago cruise with lunch includes a main-course lunch with meat, fish or vegetarian options chosen on board, served at restaurant seating on the upper deck of M/S Östanå I over 2.5 hours; drinks are not included. M/S Vindhem's listing includes a Swedish fika, defined as one hot drink, coffee or tea, and one pastry per person, with more available for purchase.

On the others you buy as you go. The Strömma listing describes a cafeteria on the main deck with snacks, sandwiches, coffee, soft drinks, beer and wine, and a restaurant on Östanå I. The live-guided cruise sells fika and drinks on board and does not allow outside food or drink. The wooden boat has a bar with soft drinks. The winter tour's cafeteria and bar offers light lunches, pastries and Swedish mulled wine. The RIB includes no food at all.

Which boat is the best to cruise on?

For atmosphere, S/S Stockholm and M/S Östanå I; for a small-boat feel, the wooden boat; for wind in your face, the RIB.

The Strömma fleet gives the widest choice. S/S Stockholm, a steamship, sails the three-hour loop from berth 16. M/S Östanå I, built in 1906 per the lunch listing, sails the 2.5-hour loop and the lunch cruise; the listing notes boats can be swapped. M/S Angantyr and M/S Evert Taube take the short loop. The listing describes limited outside seats on the upper deck, blankets for the outside deck, a sloping gangway at low water, and stairs and thresholds, and states the tours are not wheelchair accessible.

M/S Vindhem is described as a classic archipelago vessel with an outdoor panoramic deck and an indoor lounge. The classic wooden boat is partially open, closed on rainy days, and its listing warns it is not for people prone to seasickness. The RIB is a different animal: the operator provides warm overalls, wind jackets and beanies, and the route runs rain or shine, with a full refund if heavy fog or a thunderstorm cancels it.

Is the RIB tour a cruise?

Not in the usual sense. It is a two-hour speed boat run that reaches Vaxholm Fortress, for ages 12 and up, with overalls provided.

The RIB speed boat tour leaves Strandvägen berth 19 and runs past Gamla Stan into the archipelago, along summer houses and the Södermalm and Nacka shores, through what the listing calls wild scenery of rocks and forests, out to Vaxholm Fortress and back under the Djurgårdsbrunn canal bridges. Warm overalls, wind jackets, beanies and insurance are included; food, photos and pickup are not.

The restrictions are strict: not for under-12s, pregnant women or people with back problems, and no luggage or large bags. It suits travellers who want to get furthest in the shortest time and do not mind spray. For a seat, a guide at a microphone and a coffee, pick one of the steamers instead.

Which cruise is best for a first visit to Stockholm?

One of the two-hour loops. The live-guided cruise from Skeppsbron and M/S Vindhem from the Royal Palace both pass Fjäderholmarna, Stora Höggarn and Tegelön with a live English guide.

Two hours covers the inner archipelago without taking a whole afternoon, and both two-hour listings start a short walk from Gamla Stan. The live-guided cruise passes Fotografiska, Blockhusudden, the Djurgården canal, Fjäderholmarna, Stora Höggarn, Tegelön and Vaxholm before returning to the statue, and is free for children aged 0 to 6 with a paying adult. M/S Vindhem takes the Djurgården canal, then Fjäderholmarna, Stora Höggarn and Tegelön, with the fika included; its listing notes the route may change with the weather.

If the trip is in winter, the choice narrows to the 75-minute tour from Strömkajen on an icebreaking boat, with pelts and fleece blankets to borrow. Is the archipelago worth it goes through the seasons and the family rules in more detail.
