Which archipelago island is best?

For a spare afternoon, Fjäderholmarna, 25 minutes from the city. For a full day, Vaxholm, about an hour out, with a fortress on its own islet. Beyond them, Grinda, Sandhamn, Möja, Utö, Finnhamn and Dalarö by scheduled boat. Here is how to pick, how to get there, and which cruises pass which island.

With a little over 24,000 islands, islets and skerries by the statisticians' count, the Stockholm archipelago cannot have one best island. It can have a best island for the time you have. The nearest group is 25 minutes from Slussen; the capital of the archipelago is about an hour; the islands people spend a weekend on are further still.

This guide takes the islands that the official tourism pages and the listings name, says how far each is and how it is reached, lists which cruise passes which, and ends with what to expect from staying overnight. Times are given where the sources give them, and left out where they do not.

The quick answer

Fjäderholmarna is the best island for a few hours: the nearest archipelago islands, 25 minutes by boat from Slussen or Nybroplan, with restaurants, craft workshops and a boat collection. Vaxholm is the best island for a day: about an hour by boat, with a 16th-century fortress on its own islet, a town of wooden houses and a beach. Grinda, Sandhamn, Möja, Nämdö, Utö, Finnhamn and Dalarö have scheduled boats for longer days. The sightseeing cruises pass Fjäderholmarna and, on the longest, Vaxholm, without landing; the guided small-group day trip lands at Vaxholm.

What is the best island in the Stockholm archipelago?

Fjäderholmarna if you have an afternoon, Vaxholm if you have a day, and an outer island by scheduled boat if you have a night to spare.

The honest ranking is by distance, because distance decides what a visitor can do. Fjäderholmarna sits in Saltsjön just east of the city, 25 minutes from Slussen or Nybroplan, which makes it the island you can add to a day without planning. Vaxholm, which Strömma calls the capital of the archipelago, is about an hour out and fills a day with its town and fortress. The islands beyond, with scheduled boats from the city, are where the archipelago opens into bare granite and open water.

The table below sets out the islands named in the sources, how far each is where the sources say, how to land, and whether a cruise on this site passes it. For the cruises themselves, see the cruise comparison.

Is Fjäderholmarna worth visiting?

Yes, for a half day. It is the nearest archipelago island group, 25 minutes from the city, with restaurants, craft workshops, a boat collection and rocks to sit on.

Fjäderholmarna has been mentioned in records since 1381 and is managed today under the Royal Djurgården Administration. The administration's guide for 2026 lists the restaurants, Fjäderholmarnas Krog, Röda Villan, Rökeriet, Grillen, Systrarna Degen and Fjäderholmarnas Bryggeri, and the craft workshops for glass blowing, smithing and textiles in Hantverkslängan and Verkstadslängan. The Allmogebåtar collection of traditional boats has been run by volunteers since 1985, and there is pétanque.

It is served by Waxholmsbolaget, Strömma and Fjäderholmslinjen, which takes about 20 to 25 minutes from Slussen. It is also the island every cruise on this site passes: the Strömma 1.5-hour loop is described as the city and the archipelago around Fjäderholmarna, and the live cruise, M/S Vindhem, the wooden boat and the winter tour all list it on their routes.

Is Vaxholm worth a day trip?

Yes. About an hour from the city by boat, it has the 16th-century fortress on its own islet, a museum with a tower to climb, a town to walk and a beach.

Vaxholm is the island people mean by a proper day out. Visit Sweden puts it about an hour from the city by boat; Strömma's Cinderella fast ferry does it in 50 minutes from Strandvägen, and S/S Stockholm sails there in 1 hour 30 minutes from Strandvägen berth 16. SL commuter ferry 83 runs from Strömkajen and Slussen in about an hour. Vaxholm Fortress, Vaxholms Kastell, stands on its own islet reached by a short boat hop, with the Vaxholm Fortress Museum inside.

The guided small-group day trip packages the day: a steamship out at 10:00, the streets of fishermen's cottages and craft shops, lunch or a picnic by the water at your own cost, Vaxholm beach, the taxi boat to the fortress with the museum entrance included and the tower to climb, and the 16:00 ferry back, arriving about 17:30. Up to 10 people, boat fares both ways included.

What are good day trips from Stockholm by boat?

Fjäderholmarna for an afternoon, Vaxholm or Dalarö for a day, and Grinda, Sandhamn, Möja, Nämdö, Utö and Finnhamn for a long day by scheduled boat.

Visit Stockholm and Visit Sweden name the islands with scheduled boats: Grinda, Sandhamn, Möja, Nämdö, Utö, Finnhamn and Dalarö. Dalarö and Vaxholm are about an hour away. Strömma's Cinderella boats run from Nybrokajen and Strandvägen to Vaxholm, Grinda and Sandhamn and can be pre-booked. Waxholmsbolaget covers the whole stretch from Arholma in the north to Landsort in the south, year-round, with summer sailings from Strömkajen and tickets bought on board by card.

The sources used for this site give no sailing times for Grinda, Sandhamn, Möja, Nämdö, Utö or Finnhamn, so none are printed here; they are further out than Vaxholm and deserve a full day. Most islands are car-free and explored on foot or by bicycle. The best way to see the archipelago explains the SL ticket rules on the boats.

Which cruise passes which island?

Each cruise passes Fjäderholmarna. The longer loops add Stora Höggarn and Tegelön, and the three-hour Strömma cruise, the live cruise and the RIB pass Vaxholm.

The routes in the listings are consistent. The Strömma 1.5-hour tour circles the city and Fjäderholmarna; its 2.5-hour tour covers what it calls the best of the inner archipelago; its three-hour tour sees most and passes Vaxholm. The live-guided cruise passes Fotografiska, Blockhusudden, the Djurgården canal, Fjäderholmarna, Stora Höggarn, Tegelön and Vaxholm. M/S Vindhem passes the Djurgården canal, Fjäderholmarna, Stora Höggarn and Tegelön. The wooden boat goes out via the Djurgården canal to Fjäderholmarna and returns past Södermalm's cliffs and Gröna Lund. The winter tour reaches Fjäderholmarna. The RIB reaches Vaxholm Fortress.

None lands. For a visitor the practical use is choosing a loop that shows the island you plan to visit later by public boat, or the one you have already walked.

Where should you stay in the Stockholm archipelago?

On the islands with scheduled boats, which have inns and hostels. The sources this site uses name none, so this guide recommends none.

The archipelago has about 10,000 permanent residences and some 50,000 holiday homes, and the islands with scheduled boats have inns and hostels for visitors who want a night out of the city. Which one suits you depends on the island, and the listings and official pages that this site is built on describe the boats and the sights rather than the beds, so no property is named here.

Two practical points from the sources do apply. Most islands are car-free, so pack for walking or cycling from the jetty. And Waxholmsbolaget runs year-round but with its fullest service in summer, so check the return boat before you book a bed, especially outside the season.

Holiday cottages outnumber permanent homes on the islands by about five to one.

What is the most beautiful part of the archipelago?

Opinions differ by distance: the inner islands are wooded and dotted with red cottages, the outer skerries are bare pink granite and open water.

The archipelago changes as you go out. Near the city the islands are wooded, with red summer cottages on granite shores and jetties in every bay; that is what the sightseeing cruises show, and what Fjäderholmarna and Vaxholm look like. Further east the trees thin, the granite takes over and the skerries sit low in open water; that is where the scheduled boats to Sandhamn, Möja and the outer islands go. Land here is still rising about three millimetres a year since the ice age, so the skerries are, slowly, growing.

Which is more beautiful is a matter of taste. A visitor with an afternoon sees the inner version from the rail; a visitor with a day on an outer island sees the other.

Which island can you visit with a cruise and a guide?

Vaxholm, on the guided small-group day trip. It is the product on this site that lands; the sightseeing cruises pass islands and return.

The Vaxholm and Stockholm archipelago day trip is the one booking that puts a guide and a landing together. It meets at 09:45 beneath the metal sculpture outside the National Museum, where the guide wears a neon name tag and an orange hat, and runs seven hours in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German or French. It is not for wheelchair users, babies under one or people over 95, and asks you to bring beachwear, a public transport ticket, sunscreen and a jacket.

For an island without a guide, take Fjäderholmslinjen or Waxholmsbolaget to Fjäderholmarna, or SL ferry 83 to Vaxholm, and pair it with a two-hour guided loop on another afternoon. Swimming in the archipelago says what to pack for the beach.
